Our First House (Duplex Actually) - This is the Twilight Zone - Do do do do do do do do...

This week's topic is:

Tell us about your first house - after you were married.
OR
If you're not married, tell us a special memory about another house you lived in.

_______________________________________

Almost 21 years ago, when Kyle and I got married, he was living in a little one bedroom duplex. It was cozy, but was plenty big for the two of us. It had a little strip kitchen with a tiny little eating area (just big enough for 2). It also had a small living room, one bedroom and a full bath. The cool thing was that we had a full basement for storage and laundry (but we actually didn't have anything to store since we were young and poor and didn't have a lot of things).

The most interesting thing about this little duplex was the location. It was at 1309 S. Hydraulic in Wichita, KS. Do you know what happened at 1311 S. Hydraulic? The BTK Strangler murdered a woman there. (About 10 years before we moved in.) Did we know this when we moved into this duplex? No way! I never would have moved in there knowing that! As you know, the BTK was still at large until a few years ago.

It wasn't the best neighborhood anyway. One night when Kyle was at school (college courses), somebody knocked on the door. It was about 9:00 and was dark. I looked through a little area in the door where I could see out but the person on the outside couldn't see in. It was a guy about 18-20 years old with long blonde hair and a black jacket. I had the tv and the lights on so I knew he'd know I was home. I yelled, "What do you need?" He didn't say anything. So I got very nervous. I then yelled - "Go away!" Then he said, "Do you want to buy a newspaper?" I thought - huh? Then I said, "No! Please leave!" I'm sure I sounded terrified. (I think I'm might have been on the phone with my mom when this happened). Anyway, I looked out to see him jump over my porch rail and run away. I'm not sure if he was up to no good or if he was just scared of me. ha!

Another time, Kyle and I were getting ready for work. He went out to start our cars (two houses away at the corner). I heard somebody with keys coming in the back door. I said, "Who's there?" Yes, only a little lot freaked out. I then heard the door shut and I ran to the front door to yell at Kyle. He was already there at the front door. I told him what happened and he went out the back door and looked around but he didn't see anybody. We have no idea who it was or what the plan of that person was, but suffice it to say, we didn't live there long. ha! We moved to another - not so good neighborhood - with a Goth family living next door on one side and bunch of wild, partying/druggy type guys on the other.

I wasn't quite (at all) the picture taker-er then that I am these days, so I didn't have a picture handy to share here - but I googled it and found this picture on line.

We were on the left side of the duplex, right next to that house where the murder happened (the white house) Ewwww... I get the heebie jeebies just thinking about it. In fact, I'm so freaked out right now, I'm sitting here wishing I had shades to draw on my windows. I fear if I hear the littlest noise, I'll freak out, scream and wake the household up. I'm jumpy like that.

I sure hope your first house stories are more pleasant that mine. HA!

Okay, I better go the safety and security of my hubby's side now - BYE!

Thinking happy thoughts... thinking happy thoughts.

Lynnette, I had forgotten that the murder happened right next door to the duplex. But it wasn't in the time frame when you lived there was it?

The whole BTK thing gives me the creeps.

So thankful that we belong to Jesus and that He watches over us. Our lives are in His hands!

That was a cute little duplex even if it wasn't in the best area.

I came right over when you told me about the guy at the door thing and I waited with you until Kyle got home. Remember?

Love, Mom

So grateful for the Lord's protection...I have a feeling we don't even know all the things He has protected us from! I think I'll participate this week...I've so missed my Wednesday visits...but have been a little overwhelmed with ministry work and work/work and family comittments...sigh. Anyway, I have been graced with a two hour delay this morning...so I think I'll spend it with my Wednesday blogging friends.

Love to you...

Yikes! You have me freaked out too! We've only been married three years - we lived in an apartment our first year and then bought our first house. No interesting stories to share from either one ;) Right now our house is a little small (only two bedrooms) with another baby on the way, but we love the neighborhood and our neighbors. Glad you are in a safer neighborhood now ;)

Whoa....I feel freaked out just from reading about it! I have been a horrible participater lately. I didn't have time to do the short answers yesterday and I totally forgot today was your thing. I will go dig up some pics!

Yikes! Maybe that is why you all retreated out to the country!!

Lynette!! That is crazy!!! I don't know how you were able to live there at all -- I would have absolutely spazzed at the very 1st incident and I would've been GONE!My sister had someone try to break into her apartment when she was home watching TV a couple years ago and she STILL LIVES THERE!!! No way. not me.

We lived in a cozy little two bedroom apartment that was part of a 4plex. It was an old farm house that had been turned into apartments and sat right smack dab in the middle of a cattle ranch. We LOVED it ... except when the cows got in the road and made John late for work! haha

Oh, Lynnette, how scary for you. Some neighborhoods just are not comfortable. I'm so glad you & your family are now where you feel safe & secure. :)

Lynnette,

My mom and dad were newly weds in the Wichita area 25 years ago. And they have BTK stores. EWWWW is so right!! They too lived in a not great area of town in old apartments. We drove by it last year and I was thinking the whole time. Shouldn't we be ducking as we drive in this part of town? Mom and dad went to WSU when they were just married. Small world. Many smiles :O)

I LOVE just married stories!!! Thanks for sharing!! :)
I don't know how you lived there!!! Crazy!!! Thank You, Lord for Your protection! :)

As it was I was a paranoid freak in our first house. We lived in a "summer home" neighborhood and that winter there was NO ONE around...kind ghost town-ish. And I was pregnant with my first and it was when those reports starting coming out about the preggo women being kidnapped and having their babies taken out of them....I was just sure someone was going to snatch me up!!! I am kinda crazy normally, but when I am pregnant I am REALLY crazy. LOL
It would have been SO much worse if we would have lived next door to some creepy house!!! :)

Great story, Lynette! I'm sorry about your experience, but it's those experiences that make some of our best stories, don't you agree?

Our apartments weren't in the best neighborhoods either (no BTK killer though). You've reminded of the first week Russ and I lived there. He'd gone to work and the doorbell rang.
"Exterminator" said the male voice on the other side of the door.
I said I didn't think we needed an exterminator.
"I come every month. Open the door."

So I did.
Like I was born yesterday and had never watched an episode of Oprah?

He was an exterminator. Sprayed the baseboards, bade me a good day and left.

God was watching over the Foolish that day!

That's so creepy! That duplex does not sound like a nice place and neither does the neighborhood!

Gosh Lynnette, that's pretty scary. It's probably good you didn't know at the time about BTK murder. We were robbed in our first home which was also not in a good neighborhood.

Wow, Lynette. Uh, that's WAY to close for comfort. Aren't you glad you didn't know then what you know now? You had some scary experiences. But you sure gave me some food for thought and for posts. I've had a few bizarre happenings, too!

Ok, so I didn't write a post about my first house since I was married, I am actually LIVING in it. hehe I will post plenty of pictures of it during the coming holidays....if you haven't already had a peek.

But I will tell you a SHORTENED story about a house I remember from when I was younger.

I was born & raised in California, but from age 9-12 we lived in Wisconsin. We had a big beautiful house right across the street from a lake. I even remember the address, can you believe it.

I recently tried to GOOGLE EARTH the house, but it was a bad shot.

So.......... for years upon years, I had recurring dreams that I stopped by that house & told the people that lived there that I had once lived there. I told them the exact layout of the house without even stepping foot inside. I seriously know all the details! {it was on Sandy Beach Road} hehe

So before my dad died, I told him that I kept having recurring dreams about that house we lived in and I felt this strong need to visit it & see that area again. He assured me it WASN'T as I had remembered, everything had changed & it was best that I keep that memory alive on my own.

I never dreamt about that house again. Interesting huh?

I know you wanted a SUPER long comment like this. hehe
