Jonas at the piano
I bought my piano 15 years ago on a whim when my husband was out of town.My mom and I took my two little ones to a big piano sale that was advertised on television. It was at the Century 2 Convention Hall in Wichita, KS. I hadn’t really planned to buy one, but the salesman said, “We’ll, go ahead and fill out the paper work and if you’re husband say’s “No”, just call us back and we’ll cancel it!” I thought, Well that sounds easy. So, I bought it – unofficially. When my traveling husband got home and I told him I bought a piano, he said it was okay, so my piano was delivered that week.
When it arrived I marveled at it's beauty. It was a lovely addition to my living room. It was a beautiful warm oak Baldwin. Even though it needed tuning since it had just been moved, I played it (sort of) and loved it! Jared sat up on the piano bench and played like a 3 year old would. He loved it too.
My piano has been played by all of my family members. The only real pianist in our family so far is Jared, but before Anna died, she was very good at it for her age. She could play Ode to Joy at just 2 years old. Some of our other children are in the process of learning to play.

There are so many fond memories attached to our piano. I’ve discovered that I like singing around it more than playing it (there just hasn’t been the time to learn). . I love listening to Jared play. He plays so I can sing too. Some of my favorites to sing are songs from Sense and Sensibility, Sunrise Sunset, Phantom of the Opera, Rigoletto, Requiem, an old Amy Grant book and many others. On days when he senses I’m stressed out, he often plays Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice or Emma because he knows they relax me.
Our family loves to sing around the piano together too. Cecily is especially fond of Phantom of the Opera music, and her daddy sings the Phantom’s part quite well. I always tell him that he should have been an opera singer. Abigail does killer harmonies with me on Sunrise Sunset. We also love to sing Christmas Carols that Jared plays out of our Reader’s Digest Christmas book that Kyle and I bought when we first got married.
We’ve danced around the piano, taken many family pictures in front of it, and watched little people pound on it. We’ve used the piano for church gatherings. We’ve had guests sit down and play our piano, and we’ve had Jared’s students play on it.
Our piano is like a member of our family. I’m glad I bought it on a whim 15 years ago. God knew it would minister to us through the years. God knew it would be used to serve him and bring us joy. Our piano is well-loved.
(Sometimes Mr. Linky will go away temporarily. If that's the case, check back in a bit - it will pop back on here soon!)

I love this meme! Your memories of the piano brought ones back for me - that I will have to share sometime. I enjoyed reading your memories!
Lovely post Momma! It's funny because I never really sat to think about all of the different things we've done with our piano--it definitely has earned its place in our family. :)
Love you,
--Abigail
Just loving the first photograph and this beautiful memory - with so many new memories being made by the day!
My mother played and I learned to play as a child and still love to tinkle at the keys.
For years, as an adult, I continued to play on a basic keyboard. Though it gave me an opportunity to practice it was never the same.
Last year, my dear Grandmother passed away at the age of 92. She left me some money in her will and I knew that purchasing a piano would be the best thing I could possible do.
I'll never forget the day it was delivered. I sat down and played, with the windows all open, as tears streamed down my face and my heart filled with joy. I felt so close to her. As I played a monarch butterfly flew in through the open window, circled me, and then flew back out to nature. That butterfly was, without doubt, a sign from my dear Grandmother. Thanks to her, the joy of music lives on in our home and in our children's hearts.
Thanks so much for your meme, it really opened open so many memories for me too.

Amazing how it was meant to get that piano. Lovely story.
My Aunt Hilda had a piano that my cousin DJ would practice on. She actually taught me Chopsticks and the scales and that is as much as I learned. I used to sit and love to hear her play.
BTW Sunrise Sunset is one of my favorites, my first 45 record that was given to me by my parents when I was twelve with my pink box phonogragh was "Sunset, Sunrise I also love
the Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber
especially the Phantom "Music of the Night"
That's such a lovely post - so many memories attached to your piano.
Lynnette - what a beautiful story!
Two years ago we acquired Scott's family piano. Lexi tinkers on it - and is self taught to play a few songs. This past month Scott said to me when are you going to get the children lessons? Your post has given me that extra boost to find the right teacher for the children.
What joy comes from gathering together and celebrating love - even through the darkest days!
Warms hugs and love,
Jill
My husband's always been keen to buy a piano - I've always held back with the excuse that none of us play- your post made me want to go and get one and change that! What lovely memories!
Thank you for sharing,
lynette x
I'll be back to read these lovely posts after my "day job!" ;-) Have a blessed day!
What a wonderful memory. Music is a restorative for the soul. . .
Pianos have a way of bringing the family together. Music is meant to be played together!
What great memories! My memory is about singing too! My family is also big into music. And Trevor loves the piano already!
I'm SO excited about week #2! Memory Lane...here I come!!
I love how music can bring people together!
Lynnette,
Your piano has indeed been a blessing to your family. I have fond memories of it myself! I loved your story and it made me see how God knows the future,...because that day when we picked out your piano we had no idea it would mean so much to so many,...or that it would be something that would help you through such times of sorrow, or bring you so many joy filled times with your large and happy family.
Thanks for sharing! It brought me back to the time my parent bought our piano. I played the piano lots during my growing up years and now my girls are playing our piano. :)
Thanks Lynnette! This is a great meme. My piano has such similar memories. I appreciate you sharing!
Blessings,
Rachel
Thanks for taking us on this stroll!
Just please ask Jared not to play "Sunrise, Sunset" if I'm ever (miraculously) nearby...that song makes me bawl every time!
What a beautiful piano! I'm sure you'll have many more memories around it!
It's funny that you talked about your piano today. I remember one of my favorite things to do at my Meme's house was play on her piano. Then when she passed away, we got that piano, but I was a teenager and never really tried to play it much. My mom didn't have much room for it, so when I got married she gave it to me. Well, we were moving and it went into storage and it's still in storage. The other day, I was visiting my biological Grandmother and she said, "You really should get that piano out for Madison (my daughter) because she really has a gift for music and you won't regret getting her lessons." I've been wanting for a long time to get that old piano back, have it tuned and the broken keys fixed on it, and create new memories with it. Somehow I think your post is just God's way of reminding me that I should do just that!
I love the piano memory! My husband can play since he grew up with one, and I love hearing it!
I love it that your family is so musical. I remember the many times we sang with you all and it was so much fun. :) That's neat that you have so many special memories with that piano and funny how you "bought" it without Kyle. Of course he would say, Yes! :) So crazy, I remember when Jared began taking piano lessons, now he's composing and is an amazing pianist! Keep singin'!! :)
I love these memories of your piano. Our family loves to sing from Phantom of the Opera, too! Thanks for your comments on my Wednesday blog! Blessings...
Beautiful post! We are saving for our piano now. I can't play, but we plan on making sure that all of our children have basic knowledge. I am so excited!!! :)
I love our piano, too. However, most of the time it has been covered by school paraphanelia and now baby paraphanelia!!!
I have had computer issues most of the day but finally did get a short post up!
Thanks again!
Pamela
All of my kiddos had piano lessons at one time or the other. The Bear (the only child still at home) takes them now.
I've always loved listening to them practice, even when there were several sour notes in there! And when they got good, really good, it was such a blessing to listen.
Music is such a calming influence on my soul. Having my children play it doubles that effect.
Blessings!
I love your idea of making the memories into a book. That is such a great idea. I look forward to journalling some of my memories.
I have been blessed to have come across your wonderful blog. Thank you for sharing your stories of hope and happiness.
